Causes of urine leaking
There are different causes of leaking urine. For example, diabetes, certain medicines, constipation or nerve damage. The cause in women is often a weakened pelvic floor. This can result from childbirth, being overweight or the menopause. The most common cause in men is partial closure of the urethra by the prostate. This leads to retention in the bladder, resulting in an overflow and leaking urine.
You are certainly not the only person suffering from leaking urine, here are several facts:
- Around 1 million women aged 45 to 70 suffer from a form of incontinence. For example, involuntary leakage of urine when coughing, sneezing or physical exertion.
- Almost 30 percent of women above 30 experience the occasional leakage of drops.
- It is estimated that 15 percent of men suffer from incontinence as a result of surgery.
- Around one in twelve men over the age of 45 suffer from incontinence.
